Distinguished and Famous people from Central Tablelands

🤝 Ben Chifley

Ben Chifley was born in Bathurst in 1885 and worked as a railway engine driver before becoming a federal politician. Prime minister from 1945 to 1949, he also remained treasurer during a period of postwar reconstruction. His home with Elizabeth Chifley survives as a museum, preserving a modest domestic setting behind a major public career. The railway connection helps explain his enduring place in Bathurst's identity: national political decisions were made by a man whose working life had begun among the engines, shifts and responsibilities of the local railways.
